Skill Lab

Skill Lab

In July 2018, thanks to the support of the Rome Foundation, Sapienza acquired a medical simulation and training laboratory which is located at the University's Advanced Medical Training learning centre in the Policlinico Umberto I university hospital.
The objective of the Skill Lab is to allow users to put medical theory (knowledge) into practice, under the supervision of teachers ("facilitators"), in a safe and ethical setting before moving on to the patient.

The centre, equipped with advanced technological instruments and equipment, and capable of creating realistic scenarios, is aimed at students and residents of the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry and Pharmacy and Medicine for the simulation of emergency interventions and crisis conditions, including respiratory, cardiocirculatory, and renal alterations, and for management simulation of complications, including those due to the effects of particular drug interactions.

Thanks to the use of innovative and hyper-realistic mannequins, it is possible to practice specific medical activities and procedures such as the application of bandages and stitches, catheterization and blood draw techniques, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. At the same time, thanks to the use of mobile devices, it is possible to monitor the condition of “virtual” patients and, through the use of monitors connected to an audio-video recording system, to verify in real time the correct execution of maneuvers and procedures in a team environment.

There is also a digital anatomical board that reproduces anatomical and radiological images and allows three-dimensional post-processing, a computer room with a PC for microsimulation, and a digital station for computerized laparoscopic surgical practice.
